1. Drug used in
labour (deliverance): Normal labour
has three stages. In the first stage, uterus begins to contract, initially
irregularly and then gradually more regular and powerfully, while the cervix
dilates until it is fully stretched (expanded). During the second stage,
powerful contractions of the uterus push the baby down the mother’s birth canal
and out of her body. The third stage involves the delivery of the placenta.
a. Prostaglandins (before labour): carboprost,
dinoprostone, gameprost, misoprostol.
b. Pain relief: entonox® (oxygen and nitrous oxide=
second stage), fentanyl, morphine (first stage), pethidine (first stage).
c. Antiprogestogen: mifepristone.
d. Uterine muscle relaxants: atosiban, ritodrine,
salbutamol, terbutaline.
e. Uterine stimulants: ergometrine (third stage),
oxytocin (first stage, second stage and third stage).
f. Local anaesthetics (second stage): bupivacaine,
lidocaine (lignocaine).
